Absolutely. Cleaning is the most important preparation step before applying stain or sealer. If you stain over dirt, mildew, or grey weathered wood, the product will not penetrate properly. It will sit on the surface, peel, and need to be redone within a year. A clean, brightened deck accepts stain evenly and the finish lasts much longer. We recommend scheduling your deck cleaning 2 to 3 days before your staining appointment to allow the wood to dry fully.

Most wood decks benefit from annual cleaning, especially in Ontario where moisture and shade promote fast growth of mould and algae. Composite decks can often go 18 to 24 months between cleanings since they do not absorb moisture the same way. If your deck is in full sun and has minimal tree cover, you may be able to stretch the interval. Decks under heavy tree canopy or near water may need cleaning more frequently.
